Chair for Computer Aided Medical Procedures & Augmented Reality
Lehrstuhl für Informatikanwendungen in der Medizin & Augmented Reality

HiWi positions are available within the Angio group

You can choose between one of the following projects:

  • Hands-on industrial Software Prototyping: A software tool from Siemens Healthcare division shall be extended to suit needs of radiologists. Here, you will participate in an industrial project where a frequent exchange with our partners at Siemens is required.

  • QT GUI programming/Advanced OpenGL visualization: Suitable user interfaces and visualization techniques are crucial for presenting data to physicians; these will be developed here.

  • Extension and evaluation of Algorithms: The testing of algorithms is maybe the most important part of scientific research – thorough evaluation techniques and possible extensions of existing algorithms are topic in this project.

  • Collaborative Work with our clinical partners: Extraction of the needs of physicians as well as the collection of consistent clinical data are a prerequisite for developing medical software. Here, you will experience the start and refinement of projects.

  • Toolkit for Angiographic Image Segmentation: For the coders: Develop a small, easy-to-use toolkit for segmentation of vessel images/volumes.

Who we are:

The Angio group consists of 4 PhD students and a Post Doctoral Fellow, who are working in the field of Medical Image Analysis and Computer Assisted Interventions. In the last few years, this group has published their work in the most prestigious national and international conferences and journals of Medical Image Computing, competing with the top research centers worldwide. Our philosophy is to create solutions for physicians that best fit their needs and which are most suitable to be integrated into interventional/surgical workflow. This can only be achieved with a close collaboration with our medical partners at the Grosshadern hospital, Klinikum Innenstadt, and Klinikum Pasing, as well as an intensive communication with our industrial partner, Siemens Angiography/X-ray division, Forchheim.

What we are working on:

Angiographic imaging (thus the name Angio group) is a modality based on X-ray and contrast agent injection to visualize the vessel system of the human body. Very often, various images are acquired for one patient, some before, some during medical treatment. The extraction and modeling of vascular structures from these images is one of our goals. Moreover, the registration (spatial alignment) of images from different points in time is an issue being addressed in our group. Many methods from Computer Vision, Image Processing, Pattern Recognition, and Computer Graphics/Visualization are used to create suitable user interfaces and algorithms for presenting all image information to the physician in the most suitable way.

Who we are looking for:

If you’re a student in computer science/engineering/mathematics, if you have fun with programming, and if you want to extend your Curriculum Vitae with practical experience in Medical Image Analysis, you’re the perfect fit! Knowledge in C++, Matlab, OpenGL would be a plus.

What’s your benefit:

  • A deep insight into medical image analysis in one of Europe’s leading centers for Medical Image Computing and Computer Aided Surgery
  • Co-authorships in international journal/conference publications, experience in scientific research, and a good preparation for a possible academic career
  • Working experience within industrial projects
  • Lots of fun

How to apply:

For informal inquiries please contact Hauke Heibel. For the application, please send a short CV to Martin Groher and Hauke Heibel, including the project you would like to work on.
